Core Competencies and Christian Education: An Integrative Approach to Education in Marriage and Family Therapy Programs

For educating marriage and family therapy (MFT) students, there has been an increasing emphasis on their ability to demonstrate a series of core competencies as identified by the American Associate for Marriage and Family (AAMFT) (Nelson et al., 2007). This type of therapist education from outcome-based education (OBE) fosters the characteristics or worldview associated with educational institutions and the profession. At the most general level, OBE is education or socialization into the professional MFT worldview. As a corrective to this, there is a need to seek this moral character in a Christian worldview which emphasizes a metanarrative informed by the Bible as well as Christian tradition. Therefore, moral character must be identified and developed in a Christian moral community. This Christian moral education and participation in moral community encourage Christian virtues such as faith, hope, and love

A new low cost, elastic and conformable electronics technology for soft and stretchable electronic devices by use of a stretchable substrate

A growing need for ambient electronics in our daily life leads to higher demands from the user in the view of comfort of the electronic devices. Those devices should become invisible to the user, especially when they are embedded in clothes (e.g. in smart textiles). They should be soft, conformable and to a certain degree stretchable. Electronics for implantation on the other hand should ideally be soft and conformable in relation to the body tissue, in order to minimize the rejecting nature of the body to unknown implanted rigid objects. Conformable and elastic circuitry is an emerging topic in the electronics and packaging domain. In this contribution a new low cost, elastic and stretchable electronic device technology will be presented, based on the use of a stretchable substrate. The process steps used are standard PCB fabrication processes, resulting in a fast technology transfer to the industry. This new developed technology is based on the combination of rigid standard SMD components which are connected with 2-D spring-shaped metallic interconnections. Embedding is done by moulding the electronic device in a stretchable polymer. The reliability of the overall system is improved by varying the thickness of the embedding polymer, wherever the presence and type of components requires to. Manufacturability issues are discussed together with the need for good reliability of the stretchable interconnections when stress is applied during stretching

Deterministic tunnel barriers in 1D quantum electronic systems

In this thesis, we investigate the formation of tunnel barriers in one-dimensional semiconductors by means of low temperature transport experiments. The aim of this thesis is to form large deterministic tunnel barriers in InAs nanowires or carbon nanotubes that result in spatially and energetically well-defined quantum dots for systematic tunnel spectroscopy experiments. Two types of tunnel barriers are studied in this thesis: electrostatic gate-defined tunnel barriers in carbon nanotubes and InAs nanowires, and in-situ grown tunnel barriers in InAs/InP heterostructure nanowires. Chapter 2 begins with an introduction to relevant theoretical concepts for the experiments presented in this thesis. In Chapter 3, carbon nanotubes and InAs nanowires are introduced as two realizations of one-dimensional semiconductors used in this thesis. The fabrication processes and measurement setup of electrostatic gate-defined and integrated tunnel barrier devices is presented in Chapter 4. In Chapter 5, the results of locally tunable electrostatic gate-defined tunnel barrier devices in carbon nanotubes and InAs nanowires is presented. We find that electrostatic gates result in tunnel barriers that are energetically and spatially ill-defined making them difficult for tunnel spectroscopy measurements. Chapter 6 takes the other approach to forming deterministic tunnel barriers by inducing band offsets in the nanowire by forming a InAs/InP heterostructure nanowire. An in-depth analysis of InAs/InP heterostructure nanowire demonstrating their broad electrical tunability, as well as a comprehensive characterization of the InP tunnel barriers, is presented. Next, we use the quantum dot formed by the integrated tunnel barriers in an InAs/InP heterostructure nanowire as a tunnel probe to investigate the local density of states in the nanowire leads when coupled to normal metal (Chapter 7) and superconducting (Chapter 8) reservoirs, respectively. To conclude, a short summary of the thesis and outlook of possible future experiments is presented in Chapter 9

Distance and Reddening of the Enigmatic Gamma-ray-Detected Nova V1324 Sco

It has recently been discovered that some, if not all, classical novae emit GeV gamma-rays during outburst. Despite using an unreliable method to determine its distance, previous work showed that nova V1324 Sco was the most gamma-ray luminous of all gamma-ray-detected novae. We present here a different, more robust, method to determine the reddening and distance to V1324 Sco using high-resolution optical spectroscopy. Using two independent methods we derived a reddening of E(B-V) = 1.16 +/- 0.12 and a distance rD > 6.5 kpc. This distance is >40% greater than previously estimated, meaning that V1324 Sco has an even higher gamma-ray luminosity than previously calculated. We also use periodic modulations in the brightness, interpreted as the orbital period, in conjunction with pre-outburst photometric limits to show that a main-sequence companion is strongly favored.Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 6 pages, 5 figure

Ruinous Natures: The Approach of Social Timespace

This Dissertation advances across three areas: first, a theory of social timespace that borrows from critical social theories, post-ontological systems theory, and literary critique; second, it proposes a revisioning of sociological ‘methods’ by an historical reproachment: how sociology is a method among others for the study of society and culture, what are called variously the social sciences, and how sociology also has a method of its own developed in the work of the first sociological institutions in the United States, Germany, and France, that is parallel to linguistic structuralism in the same historical period and has mostly been advanced outside the discipline in narrative and discourse analysis; third, the substantive matter of this dissertation concerns a shift in the sociology of the environment to a political ecology, and critique of the latter. The binding theoretic development, mode of analysis, and the object of a political ecology formed in environmental sociology, are configured under the singular term of socioanalysis. The technique of socioanalysis, its eco-environmental object, and theory implied by the practice of socioanalysis are the guiding proposition of this research
